For newlyweds K. Ajay and Indraja, an intense fight at the conclusion of their wedding involving about 100 persons from both sides will forever remain etched in their memory.
Several videos of the violent exchange, with chairs used to attack one another and some people bleeding, as the newlyweds stood puzzled went viral on Saturday.
Kodad rural police said they rushed to Thogarrai village on October 30 evening when they received a call on the helpline 100.
Police said things went out of control when the bride’s side, which had come from Yerragondapalem of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh to the groom’s place here for performing the marriage, refused a ‘DJ baraat ’ (groom’s wedding procession) after the wedding reportedly because the return journey was long.
Argument turns violent
With the groom’s side insisting on DJ baraat and the bride’s relatives saying no, relatives on both sides engaged in a heated exchange, and soon the function turned violent with people from both sides coming to blows.
“The incident occurred just before the couple was to leave Thogarrai village after dinner for Yerragondapalem. The fight started over DJ baraat . We could only disperse the crowd and no complaint was filed,” said an official.
Things became normal after about an hour, and, according to Thogarrai residents, elders from both sides reached a compromise on the issue, and the couple had a calm farewell.
