Once in a week, and that too at odd hours. That is the water supply scene in Turkapally, Kaukur, Yapral and Matchabollarum surrounding Alwal. “Streets in our locality are like battle zones on the day the drinking water is supplied. Women gathering at public taps in large numbers is a common scene here,” housewife, Sundaramma, says.
Since there is no guarantee how long the water supply would last, women rush to taps carrying all types of vessels to store water and the public water taps turn into battle zones as tempers rise turning arguments into even fights. Parts of Matchabollarum received water on Sunday yet no one is sure when would water be supplied again. It can be five or six days and more than a week, says Doli Ramesh, ex-councillar of Alwal municipality.
Innumerable representations were submitted to the authorities but no corrective measures were initiated.
In fact, some residents say that water supply was much better when Alwal was an independent municipality.
They hoped that bringing Alwal under GHMC would improve quantity, quality and regularity in drinking water supply.
“Officials proved us wrong and don't react to our complaints. Why cannot they come to the colonies, talk to people and assess the situation,” Mr. Ramesh asks.
