Residents of Madhapur and Jubilee Hills may look forward to crossing the iconic Durgam Cheruvu on foot or by bicycle, besides riding two- or four-wheelers, starting November this year.
The cable-stayed bridge under construction across the lake will have, besides a four-lane vehicular path, a 2.5-metre walking track and a two-lane cycling track on both sides, GHMC Commissioner M. Dana Kishore informed.
On Saturday, Mr. Dana Kishore accompanied the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Arvind Kumar, on the latter’s visit to the Durgam Cheruvu development works.
Assuring completion of the bridge by October-end, he said the corporation is going ahead in a planned way to accomplish the target.
Lighting system
The bridge will host an integrated lighting system being installed with an expenditure of ₹10 crore, whereby street lights and traffic lights will be embedded in the steel pillars of the bridge, he said.
Engineers overseeing the bridge construction have informed that two million work hours have been put into the construction of the ₹180-crore bridge, without any accident or casualty.
The 234-metre bridge, touted as one such with longest span, will be one of its kind in the world, and could attract tourists, officials said. Of the total 53 CC segments of the bridge, 13 have been placed so far. The segments are being manufactured at Kondapur, and brought to the project site during night. All the works are being performed at a height of 20 metres and above from the ground level, a statement from GHMC informed.
To ease traffic
Extradosed cable-stay technology is being adopted to preserve the lake’s heritage and beauty and when completed, the bridge will cater to dense traffic movement from Road no. 45, Jubilee Hills to Inorbit Mall.
The bridge is expected to drastically cut down the distance between Madhapur and Jubilee Hills.
MD, TSIIC, Narasimha Reddy, GHMC Additional Commissioner D. Hari Chandana and Chief Engineer R.Sreedhar were present on the visit.
