Kaleshwaram project engineers and the agency executing Package 6 works, including the pump house near Nandi Medaram, have pressed into service a team of eight professional swimmers from Visakhapatnam to check for leakages and any other abnormalities, if any, in the surge pool and draft tube gates.

Checking inside the surge pool now being filled with water from Yellampally for conducting wet run of the pump house has been taken up as part of the fool-proof run up to the wet run along with build up of required water level.

Two teams

According to the project engineers, the divers were sent inside as two teams of four members each to conduct checking process.

It is stated that along with surge pool, the divers' team conducted checking of three gates of the draft tubes on Saturday and they would check the remaining four gates on Sunday.

They have not found any leakages in the checking conducted so far.

Quoting Advisor to Government (Lift Irrigation) K. Penta Reddy, the Irrigation Department engineers said the build up of water level in the surge pool would be taken up further from 124.5 meters after arriving at a conclusion that there are no leakages.

Even the seepage water from the drainage gallery of the draft tubes was also being pumped into the surge pool along with the water from Yellampally reservoir, the project engineers said.
