Chintalapalem villagers stalling the public hearing in Suryapet on Wednesday.

The village of Dondapadu in the mandal was gripped in tension on Wednesday, as residents took to damaging the venue property and marked their protest opposing the establishment of a new pharmaceutical unit. The environmental public hearing by the State Pollution Control Board scheduled for the day was postponed following the disruption.

The proposed establishment of a new synthetic organic chemicals (bulk drug & intermediate) manufacturing unit of M/s. SGR Laboratories Private Limited was severely opposed by residents, who said, “the whole area was already damaged beyond repair”.

Villagers, men and women, came out in large numbers on Wednesday carrying placards, shouted slogans, pulled down the tents, the dais and broke the chairs at the survey number 290, the project site.

According to women who carried along with them bottles of drinking water and flashed them for cameramen, the colour of the water is from concentrated groundwater pollution in Chintalapalem mandal, a home for several cement and chemical industries. A few farmers who brought pesticide bottles with them also attempted suicide in protest, but were prevented. And with several scattered groups of protesters, it was a tough task for the police to maintain order.
