US-based couple visit bank after a decade, find locker empty

In a bizarre incident, an NRI couple who visited the State Bank of India’s New Mallepally branch to withdraw valuables from a locker after more than a decade claimed to have found it empty.

According to Humayaun Nagar Police, the complainants Ameena and Moazzam Hussain, are US residents. They are said to have last opened the locker in 2005. Police said that the couple claimed that around 80 tolas of gold is missing.

On Saturday, they tried to open the locker with their keys, but failed. They arrived on Tuesday and with the bank’s help opened the locker. It was then that they realised that the locker was ‘empty’.

While the bank is said to have CCTV cameras outside the locker room, there is no footage which records activity inside. Investigation officer Narayan Reddy said that inquires are in process and a case would be booked soon.
