UoH cuts seats, courses

Reduction is due to UGC guidelines: Vice-Chancellor

Seat cuts and wound-up courses await University of Hyderabad this year with the varsity cutting 40 Ph.D seats and closing down eight courses, including two integrated MA courses, for the 2018-19 academic year .

Seat reduction is the result of the 2016 University Grants Commission guidelines, UoH Vice-Chancellor P. Appa Rao said on Wednesday. The UGC has made it mandatory for professors to guide just eight Ph.D and three M.Phil students. Associate professors are expected to take only six Ph.D and two M.Phil students under their wing. The UGC has also stipulated assistant professors to guide a maximum of four Ph.D and one M.Phil student in any given academic year.

1,945 seats

In the new academic year, UoH would offer 1,945 seats in total as against 2,015 seats last year. The courses which are being closed down include Integrated M.Sc in Earth Sciences and MA in Urdu. Comparative literature, Dalit and Adivasi studies, regional studies, Indian diaspora, Hindi, human rights and gender studies will not offer M.Phil and Ph.D courses. Speaking at a media conference, Mr. Rao said research courses can be offered only when there are vacant slots under faculty members as per UGC-2016 guidelines. Some courses had to be taken off the prospectus because permanent faculty members were not available, authorities clarified.

The varsity administration denied allegations that it forced 200 Ph.D students who had de-registered to forfeit their degrees.

“The academic council on March 19 decided that all students who have been delaying Ph.D submission for a prolonged time should be given a one time opportunity to submit their thesis. As per this order, 66 candidates submitted their thesis. Eight students did not turn up despite intimation,” Mr. Rao said. The varsity, however, would be offering six new courses including integrated M.Sc and Ph.D in biochemistry and molecular biology, Ph.D in nano-science and technology, MA and Ph.D in education, Ph.D in translation studies and PG diploma in Sanskrit and computational linguistics. The varsity might also offer M.Ed and is waiting for approval from National Council for Teachers Education to start the course.

Entrance exam

For the year 2018-19, online application forms for UoH’s entrance examination can be submitted between April 5 and May 5. Entrance examinations would be held between June 1 and June 5. The entrance examinations would be held at 38 centres across the country.

However, if a centre receives less than 300 applications, the varsity would not conduct the examination there. In 2017, UoH denied examination in seven pre-announced centres thanks to this rule.

The varsity has introduced a new centre in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh this year. Banaras Hindu University would host the examination in this centre, just as UoH hosts BHU’s entrance in Hyderabad.
