Two persons involved in siphoning off money by using cloned debit/credit cards were nabbed by the Hyderabad police here on Friday.

The duo cloned bank cards by using magnetic strip readers and writer-swiping machines after obtaining the card details and security pins of various banks’ customers from a data provider after payment of Bitcoins.

Mohammed Afrozuddin (34), a car driver from Chandrayangutta and Pankaj Sachdeva (32), an unemployed man from Sun City here and a native of Moga district in Punjab, were arrested.

Explaining the modus operandi, Additional Commissioner of Police (Task Force) S. Chaitanya Kumar said the duo would enter the procured data in a software ICQ and withdraw money using the cloned cards. The original card holders would realise the fraud only after money is withdrawn from their accounts, without any clue on how their cards got misused. The police recovered two laptops, swiping machines, bank cards and two mobile phones.

On a tip-off, the sleuths of Hyderabad Commissioner’s task force east zone apprehended Afrozuddin and Pankaj. The accused, who met each other through a common friend, told police that they hatched the plan to make a quick buck and downloaded an app which provides the bank card holders’ data along with security number, he said. Along with the seized material, the duo were handed over to Kanchanbagh police for further investigation.
