TS will promote groundnut exports: Agriculture Minister

Govt. eyeing direct exports to the Netherlands and other European countries

Minister for Agriculture S. Niranjan Reddy, on a visit to Germany and Netherlands along with an official delegation, has stated that the State government would make efforts to export groundnut produced in Telangana directly to Netherlands and other European countries under direct trading promotion.

The delegation visited Amsterdam, the capital of Netherlands, on Sunday and had a meeting with the groundnut importers. According to the officials, the Minister had a meeting with representatives of importers including William E. Pearl and Cheryl E. Harrison, both professors who have done extensive research on groundnut and running their own organisations by offering technology support to groundnut exports by several countries.

Mr. Niranjan Reddy explained to the groundnut importers there that the crop was cultivated on about 2.5 lakh acres in the rabi (second crop) season in combined Mahabubnagar district in Telangana every year as the area has favourable soil and weather conditions for growing quality groundnut. Some importers from the Netherlands had visited Mahabubnagar last year but the groundnut produce was mainly being exported through the middlemen in Mumbai and Delhi, he said.

Export of groundnut produced in the State had come down in the recent decades following the presence of aflatoxin in groundnut due to excessive use of fertilizers and improper drying of the produce, after 1980s. However, farmers were producing groundnut without aflatoxin now with an eye on exports.

Stating that the groundnut trade across the globe was worth USD 1 billion a year, the Minister said European countries were mostly importing the legume food crop from Indonesia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and others. The Minister stated that the organisations run by the two representatives of groundnut importers in the Netherlands had offered help in production, packing and export of quality groundnut from Telangana to their country and other nations as well.

The delegation comprising Principal Secretary C. Parthasarathi, Director of Telangana State Seed Development Corporation K. Keshavulu and chairman of TSSDC K. Koteshwar Rao also held a meeting with the representatives of vegetable seed companies there to promote export of vegetable by asking them to produce quality seed in Telangana.
