Plea aimed at improving market price ruling below the MSP of ₹ 3,710 per quintal

As the harvesting of soyabean is peaking up, the State government has requested the Centre to procure a higher quantity of the crop produced in Telangana than the approved quota since the market price has been ruling below the minimum support price of ₹3,710 per quintal.

Minister for Agriculture S. Niranjan Reddy has stated that the market price of soyabean has been ranging between ₹2,831 per quintal to ₹3,586 per quintal as the arrivals are on the rise.

However, due to the gap in market price and the MSP, most of the farmers were preferring to sell their produce at the procurement centres opened by the State government as part of the Centre’s price support scheme.

In a letter addressed to Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Mr. Niranjan Reddy has explained that soyabean has been cultivated in 1,71,213 hectares this season and the production is estimated at 1,93,983 tonnes at the rate of 11.33 quintals per hectare. He noted that the Centre has agreed to procure 58,608 tonnes, about 30.2% of the estimated production, of soyabean and about 373 tonnes has been procured till October 22 from 199 farmers.

Further, he explained to the Union Minister that 19 purchase centres have been opened so far against the 47 proposed.

Favourable conditions

Explaining that favourable seasonal conditions could result in higher production of soyabean than the estimated quantity, Mr. Niranjan Reddy requested the Union Minister to procure at least 50% of the estimated production by approving another 38,383 tonnes of quantity taking the total quantity of procurement to 96,991 tonnes.

Mr. Niranjan Reddy said such an intervention would stabilise the market price so that farmers could get a better price for their crop and would help avoid distress sale of their produce, particularly by the small and marginal farmers.
