TS gets 10 schools, 2 hostels as part of MsDP scheme

It envisages skill development, health and sanitation, and education in minorities-concentrated districts and towns

The Centre has cleared the decks for 10 schools and two hostels for Telangana as a part of the Multi-Sectoral Development Programme (MsDP).

The MsDP is a result of the Sachar Committee’s recommendations. It seeks to provide amenities and infrastructure for skill development, health and sanitation, and education in minorities-concentrated districts and towns. While the Centre’s component of the funds is 60%, the remainder is the State’s contribution. Sources said that while the State had drawn up plans and sought ₹ 1,000 crore this year as a part of MsDP, the Centre has sanctioned ₹ 250 crore.

In previous years, the fund allocation for each school was ₹ 18 crore. However, this year, it has been enhanced to ₹ 20 crore. “The new schools which have been sanctioned are: two in Hyderabad, one in Sangareddy, two in Adilabad, two in Nirmal, one in Nizamabad, one in Bodhan and one in Mahabubnagar,” a source familiar with the allocation said. The hostel, he added, have been sanctioned in Mahabubnagar and Nirmal.

The current number is an increase from the sanction of schools after the formation of Telangana. For, in 2015-16, the number of schools stood at seven.

“We have been consistently seeking an increase in funds from the Central government. This is because, the Telangana government believes that education is crucial for the development of communities,” the source said.

The work for the seven schools sanctioned in 2015-16 is currently in different stages of completion. The construction is being carried out by the Telangana Education Welfare and Infrastructure Development Corporation.

Information from the Telangana State Minorities Commissionerate, which is dealing with MsDP, revealed the body is working closely with district Collectors in order to alienate land for schools. So far, it has over an acre in Hyderabad, 5 acres each in Sangareddy, Mahbubnagar and Nirmal, 6 acres and 20 guntas in Adilabad, and approximately 5 acres in Nizamabad.
