SCR GM inaugurates Automatic Coach Washing Plant at Kacheguda

A ₹2.5 crore Automatic Coach Washing Plant (ACWP) was inaugurated at Kacheguda railway station by SCR General Manager Gajanan Mallya on Thursday. The move is to ensure a neat and clean rail journey, besides providing safe and reliable service to rail-users, said Mr. Mallya. The exterior coach cleaning system can undertake high-standard cleaning of an entire train rake in the least possible time reducing the use of water and electricity. The plant is a multi-stage external cleaning system that involves high-pressure water jet, horizontal and vertical rotating nylon and cotton combination brushes for cleaning the coaches of a train rake, as it slowly moves forward in the maintenance pit line.

Each train rake of 24 coaches takes around 15 minutes to undergo cleaning, while electricity consumption is around 10 units with just person overseeing the entire process.Water consumption also goes down by around 60% – 1,440 litres as against 3,600 litres for cleaning a 24-coach train, saving 2,000 litres of fresh water per train. With around 160 coaches getting cleaned at Kacheguda each day, the fresh water saved aggregates to 14,000 litres a day. The cost incurred for bogie wash and alkaline chemical works out to around ₹350 per train.

“Detergent is sprayed first followed by high-speed brushing to remove dust and muck. Later, alkaline detergent meant to clean the external body is sprayed followed by brushing twice. Then, recycled water is pressure sprayed and the coaches are brushed. The last part involves spraying of fresh hot water at 50 degree C on the coaches to ensure perfect cleaning,” said CPRO Ch. Rakesh.
