District-based people’s movements planned to rejuvenate party

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has decided to constitute a committee of experts to study in depth the irrigation projects taken up by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government.

“Opposing Kaleshwaram project will be going against people who are eagerly waiting for water. But to uncover the corruption in it, an expert study is required,” Congress leaders said at a meeting of the office bearers and DCC presidents here on Saturday. The meeting, organised first time after the party’s defeat in the State Assembly elections, had leaders propose to organise decentralised and district-based movements.

“Everyone speaks about Kaleshwaram, but what about projects like the SLBC tunnel project in Nalgonda, or issues concerning projects in each of our districts. Every leader irrespective of designation should go to the people. We are unable to connect to them just with press meets,” opined Malkajgiri MP A. Revanth Reddy.

MLC Jeevan Reddy termed the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project a symbol of TRS failure. Former leader of Oppposition in the Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir said: “Examination time has arrived for the Congress party and it is not elections, but demanding water from KCR.”

‘Change priority’

Brief tension prevailed inside the meeting hall at Vijaya Vihar and outside, when Sangareddy MLA T. Jayaprakash Reddy expressed dismay that the party was “singing the same old song of Kaleshwaram, but not prioritising for municipal elections now.” Echoing the urgency, Manthani MLA D. Sridhar Babu said immediate attention should be given to the upcoming elections.

Briefing the press later, TPCC chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the party will take up programmes like ‘Jail Bharo’ and padayatra to expose government’s irregularities in projects.

‘Oppose new building’

“We are completely against building a new Assembly and demolishing the existing Secretariat,” he said and added that Mr. Revanth Reddy and Mr. Jeevan Reddy will visit the Secretariat on Monday.

Neither disciplinary action against Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, who was absent, nor candidate for Huzurnagar byelection was discussed, the TPCC president said.

ULB elections

Preparatory meets for municipal elections, the new committees and filling up of party vacancies will begin in the first week of July, he added.

All India Congress Committee in-charge for the State R.C. Khuntia, AICC secretary Saleem Ahmed and senior Congress leaders from all districts were present.
