The Town Planning wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has identified a total of 455 unauthorised constructions going on across the city, and embarked upon the task of pulling them down.

A drive against dilapidated and unauthorised structures has been on for the past four days.

The corporation had already demolished 35 structures, being built without permission.

Identification of ongoing unauthorised constructions started in the beginning of June after Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar expressed displeasure with the functioning of the Town Planning wing.

Since then, the circle level Town Planning officials have been asked to list encroachments and illegal structures in their purview, in addition to dilapidated structures.

Hassle-free action

As per the data from 26 circles so far, GHMC staff could identify 786 dilapidated structures and close to 3,700 encroachments on 156 stretches, besides 455 unauthorised structures in progress. “We have asked them to list only ongoing illegal structures, as removing these structures immediately would be hassle-free,” explained a senior official.

At 63, Chandanagar has the maximum number of illegal constructions among all the circles from where data has been obtained. Begumpet follows with 57, while Santosh Nagar has 46.

“Existing relaxation for building permissions without 10 per cent mandatory mortgage of built-up space, is applicable for structures coming up within 200 square metres of plot size. Majority of the illegal structures identified belong to those raised in such plots, exceeding permitted number of floors,” explained the official.

Regarding encroachments on road space, Hayatnagar and Goshamahal circles take the cake with 560 and 550 permanent structures respectively built on six stretches each. Santosh Nagar has a total of 528 encroachments on 10 stretches. Information from Rajendra Nagar, Kapra, Musheerabad and Amberpet is yet to be received fully.

On Friday too, the Town Planning officials went ahead with demolition of 11 dilapidated structures, six encroachments and two unauthorised constructions, in Kapra, Lingojiguda, Old Malakpet, Hyderguda, Amberpet, Serilingampally, Yousufguda, Patancheru, Qutbullahpur, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad, Chilkalguda and Begumpet.
