Three youths from Hyderabad washed away in Maharashtra

Flash flood at Sahasrakund waterfall; bodies yet to be traced

Three youths from Hyderabad, who were part of an eight-member picnic group, were washed away in a flash flood at the Sahasrakund waterfall in Maharashtra’s Nanded district on Tuesday.

The famous waterfall is located about 300 km from Hyderabad and about 100 km from Adilabad district headquarter town, and attracts a good number of visitors from Telangana.

Four of the group — Nadeem Khan, Rafiuddin, Akram and Sohail — had entered the Penganga river on which the waterfall is located from the front instead of the designated place to watch it. There was a sudden gush of water which washed all of them away. Local fishermen managed to save only Nadeem.

The bodies of the other three were yet to be located. Local police were searching for the bodies with the help of expert swimmers until reports last came in.

According to the petition filed by Shahed Khan, a 23-year-old student and resident of Falaknuma in Hyderabad, he was among the party of eight along with Shahbaz, Sohail (namesake of one of the youths washed away) and Burhan that started from Hyderabad for Nanded at around 11 p.m. on Monday. They reached the waterfall at about 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police said the group was in a state of shock and failed to disclose their full names and addresses. A case has been registered at the Islapur police station.
