Tension escalated at Osmania University on Monday after the police prevented the OUJAC members from taking out ‘Chalo Assembly’ march demanding the Telangana State government roll back its decision on regularising the services of contract employees.
The police laid siege to the OU campus since morning. All entry and exit routes leading to the campus were blocked and rows of concertina wire were put to prevent the students from coming out. Personnel drawn from various units were deployed to prevent any trouble.
Around noon, a group of students tried to take out a march when police stopped them at the NCC Gate and pushed them back. The protestors entered into an argument with the police, who however did not relent. Later, a few of them hurled stones at the policemen only to be chased away. The police took 10 students into custody at the NCC Gate, they were released later.
Later, the students burned an effigy of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and raised slogans against the government. They also demanded setting up Telangana State Public Service Commission and filling up of vacancies through notification. “We have fought for separate State in the hope of getting jobs but the government is doing injustice to us,” lamented K Manavata Rai, a student leader.
Meanwhile, another group of students who were planning to stage a protest near the Assembly were taken into custody and shifted to Shahinyathgunj police station. The police registered cases against five members.
