Telangana Armed Struggle veteran dead


Best known as unanimously elected sarpanch for three decades

Communist Party of India (Marxist) senior leader and veteran of the Telangana Armed Struggle from here, Gattikoppula Ramreddy passed away due to age-related illness at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Tuesday. He was 87.

Ramreddy hails from Thadakamalla village in Miryalaguda. Apart from his contribution in the Struggle, he is remembered best as the unanimously elected sarpanch of his native village for three decades.

A strong voice for farmers in the ayacut area, Ramreddy was part of several movements over minimum support price, quality seed and fertilisers, members of CPI(M) here recalled.

Offering condolences, district secretary Mudireddy Sudhakar Reddy, along with others, recalled that Gattikoppula was tortured by the authorities of the Nizam State over suspicion that he served as courier and assistant to dalam leaders, but he remained strong, they said.

A void is left after his death, he will always be remembered as a leader of Communist and people’s movements, the CPI(M) leaders said.
