The Telangana unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is carving out a unique body consisting of parents of school students to bring about necessary changes in educational system.
The Telangana State Parents Union will be launched in the second week of this month with committees at the level of mandals, districts and State. The AAP has already started the groundwork to strengthen the soon-to-be launched Union and is planning campaigns centred on the demands.
“In this State, teachers unions have a say but not parents associations,” said Venkat Reddy, convenor, Telangana AAP. “We want to mobilize the parents and make them a force to fight for issues. The AAP members have already started visiting basthis across the city and talking to the parents. In Hyderabad, 73 per cent students go to private schools which are behaving undemocratically. The state of government schools also needs to be very much improved.”
The Union will have three major demands. The first demand is the creation of an autonomous regulatory body of parents by the government which will have a say in education policies and framework in the state. The second demand is the compulsory inclusion of parents in the managements of private schools with legitimate powers and finally, implementation of Government Order (GO) 42 which is related to school fees.
After the launch of the new body, the members will meet to chalk out the strategy on how to achieve their objectives.
