TAFRC proposes 15 to 20% interim fee hike for engg colleges

Web options process may be postponed by two or three days

The newly constituted Telangana Admission and Fee Regulation Committee (TAFRC) has allowed engineering colleges to hike their fee by 20% if their existing fee is less than ₹ 50,000 and by 15% if the existing fee is above that.

However, this would be an interim arrangement till the TAFRC finalises the fee structure to ensure that the counselling process runs smoothly. Mentioning the fee of each college is mandatory in the website for the convenience of students.

Web options may be delayed by two more days. As per the existing plan, the web options were to start on July 1. However, officials, on condition of anonymity, said the process might be postponed further by two or three days. But the official confirmation is yet to come.

Interim order

The problem is with the 81 colleges that have approached the court and got an interim order to collect the fee proposed by them until the TAFRC finalises the fee structure after discussions with colleges based on the documents submitted by them. Officials say there is some confusion about a few colleges that have got an interim order from the court last year against the fee fixed by the previous AFRC for the 2016-2018 block period.

Whether the 15% and 20% interim hike allowed by the present TAFRC is on the fee fixed by the earlier AFRC or the fee being collected as per the court directions is not clear.

“These issues have to be sorted out first and this may delay the web options process by a couple of days.”

The TAFRC would, in all likelihood, call the colleges that had proposed enormous hike over the previous 2016-2018 block period in a day or two to find a solution or fix the final fee itself, officials said. Majority colleges that fall in the below-₹50,000 fee category may agree to the 20% interim hike proposed by the TAFRC now.

However, the sought-after colleges that have proposed huge hike may want to go ahead with the interim enhancement allowed by the court recently. “The court orders will stand if the TAFRC doesn’t fix the fee before the web options process starts. So we will collect the fee as per the court orders,” said the representative of a college management, wishing anonymity. There is a huge variation in the fee proposed by them now in comparison to what they have been collecting till now.

The problem is with these few colleges and the TAFRC may want to complete the process fast for these few colleges in a couple of days and then look at the claims of other colleges that have not proposed much hike.
