‘Switch to Android at furious pace’

Study says consumers are increasingly discarding feature phones for smartphones that run on the Android OS. Opera Software officials, said Android smartphones form 44 per cent of Opera mini user base, which is a huge jump from last year when it stood at 21 per cent.

Feature phone users in India are increasingly migrating to Android smartphones at blistering pace, says a study by Opera Software. On Wednesday, Opera Software released broad trends of browsing behaviour among Android users in India.

The survey says the user base of Android had increased by 160 per cent.

Video access Watching videos on Android smartphones, on websites such as YouTube, Daily Motion and Metacafe had increased. The number of those accessing videos through web browser Opera mini had risen a whopping 205 per cent.

“Smartphone user base in general has surged by an impressive 120 per cent. The migration from feature phones to smartphones is happening at an astonishing rate in India,” said vice-president (South Asia) of Opera Software Sunil Kamath.

The study also points out that Indian consumers of mobile phones are price conscious and smartphones below the Rs.10,000 mark were in huge demand. “The growth is possible because Indian mobile manufacturers are releasing smartphones at highly competitive prices,” Mr. Kamath said.

Internet penetration The Opera study said internet penetration in India was 20 per cent. Of these 92 per cent had access to the internet through mobile devices.
