Surging crowd puts metro rail service under pressure

A total of 2.89 lakh passengers travelled in metro trains on Friday last

The Friday’s downpour and resultant traffic chaos has put the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) and L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) under pressure as 15,000 more passengers than usual thronged the Hi-Tec City and Durgam Cheruvu stations.

The unexpected surge tested the service network with passengers often pressing panic buttons for various reasons making the trains halt and doors open. Most complained about air-conditioning or about an accomplice being left behind.

On Monday, HMR managing director N.V.S. Reddy refuted the news being circulated that there was a breakdown in service at Jubilee Hills station and slow running of trains on Ameerpet-Hi-Tec City road.

“Logbooks maintained by the L&TMRH too did not show anything amiss,” he said.

Mr. Reddy explained that trains between Jubilee Hills Check Post and Hi-Tec City stations are being run under restricted conditions on ‘twin single line’. To cater to more crowd, two trains are being run one after the other with an additional train being run during peak hours by keeping spare trains at Hi-Tec City and Ameerpet stations.

“In this method, the time tabling is asymmetric and trains at times come in quick succession or even 15 minutes at times, yet we are maintaining an average frequency of 7.5 minutes in this section. Till the trains that come one after the other are cleared and the ‘twin single line’ section becomes free, the next train is not allowed to move for safety reasons. It will be kept at Jubilee Hills station for a few minutes, if required,” he said.

The metro rail services were extended up to 11 p.m. on Friday last to enable passengers to reach their respective destinations and a total of 2.89 lakh passengers travelled, while the footfalls at the stations was 3.06 lakh.
