Station designs finalised for first metro line

September 06, 2011 11:24 am | Updated 11:24 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Hyderabad Metro Rail and L&T authorities have finalised the seven station designs and pier locations for constructing the elevated metro rail stretch from Nagole to Mettuguda (eight km).

This is the first section of the third line of Nagole to Shilparamam being taken up among all three lines.

While the earthen work to build foundations for the Nagole depot is on and expected to continue till February next year, metro rail officials have begun safe bearing capacity test for pier (pillar) foundations at Uppal on Monday under the supervision of HMR tech team led by Chief Engineer Md.Ziauddin and L&T team headed by P.R.A.Khan.

Pillar design

The test will determine the pillar design for two more days at hourly intervals. The same procedure will be adopted on other stretches too. Elevated stations on all the three lines or corridors will be 135 metres long and 20 metres wide. The design would be different for each of the lines but general characteristics of open spaces, ample ventilation, etc would be common. All the sketches of the first stretch, including alignment details, will be put on the www.hyderabadmetrorail.in in the next few days, explained HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy.

There are going to be 273 pillars on the stretch with spacing of 100 ft but at the stations the spacing between two pillars will be 45 ft to 55 ft. Metro line viaduct height will range from 8.5 metres (28 ft) to 17 metres (56 ft).

Metro line officials are planning to take up barricading of the stretch only after a month when the rains are expected to subside. The current road conditions with scrapped bitumen and potholes are preventing them from taking up hectic construction activity along the busy road.

Pact with NHAI

Once the barricading is done, road maintenance becomes the responsibility of HMR for which it had already lined up ready mix concrete and bitumen contractors. As far as the second stretch of Miyapur to Erragadda on the first line of Miyapur to L.B.Nagar, which HMR is planning to take up next, it is likely to sign a pact with the National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) soon.

It entails payment of about Rs.25 crore to NHAI for developing additional one or two lanes on either side of the main road before barricading is done for constructing the piers.
