State universities ‘neglected’, says BJP

Want Governor’s office to clarify

The Bharatiya Janata Party has expressed concern over the State government’s claims that Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan was satisfied with the performance of the universities claiming that the universities were “totally neglected” by the current dispensation.

The BJP took strong exception to the comments made by Deputy Chief Minister (Education) Kadiyam Srihari after a meeting of the vice-chancellors and senior officials in the city on Wednesday. BJP floor leader in Assembly G. Kishan Reddy said vice-chancellors were not appointed to several universities and universities and institutions of higher learning were being discriminated against by the government.

There were more than 700 posts of teachers vacant in Osmania University and the number was in excess of 200 in Kakatiya University while the situation was no better in other universities in the State. “There are several departments in the Osmania University where the posts of professors are lying vacant,” he said. No steps had been taken to fill the contract and outsourcing vacancies in different universities so far and messes were yet to be opened while the sanitation and cleanliness related issues were not being addressed by the managements. Mr. Kishan Reddy said the Governor’s secretariat ought to clarify whether Mr. Narasimhan had expressed his satisfaction over the functioning of the universities. As the condition in the universities was deteriorating fast, the Governor should take the initiative to visit these institutions of higher learning and ensure that the situation was remedied. He demanded that the government take steps to release funds to the universities for improving the conditions there.
