Spurious seed racket busted

Rachakonda and Mahabubnagar Police bust a spurious seed racket and nabbed four people who were allegedly selling them to farmers in Telangana and neighbouring states.

Acting on a complaint, Rachakonda Police raided a godown of Srusti Seeds at Thorrur village in Hayathnagar on Tuesday. Agricultural officials who were part of the raid observed irregularities and collected samples. They also seized the stock and ordered that further sale be stopped.

They then alerted Madgula Police in Mahboobnagar where some of the seed stock was sent for sale. Madgula Police and local agricultural officials found dubious cotton seed packets at a premises unauthorised for stocking seeds and registered cases.

On Wednesday, another of police and agricultural officials visited the Thorrur godown where they recorded a few more alleged irregularities including sale to unauthorised persons and improper record maintenance. Cases were regsitered by the Hayathnagar Police under various sections of Indian Penal Code. The owner of the company, Janaki Ram was also apprehended.

The premises of a second company in Boothpur village of Mahabubnagar, where Janaki Ram is a director, was also raided on Wednesday. This company was allegedly involved in sourcing the seeds. The Rachakonda Police said the companies were selling seeds to farmers in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Rachakonda Police also announced that any complaints related to spurious seeds can be reported on the number 9490617111.
