Barkas residents protest attempts by the authorities to inspect power meters

June 23, 2013 01:35 am | Updated November 16, 2021 08:21 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The anti-power pilferage drive taken up by the APCPDCL in Old City received yet another blow on Saturday when local people in Barkas area resisted their attempts to inspect the power meters.

Special teams of the company with the support of the police personnel swooped on the area on Saturday morning to carry out the inspections on complaints of rampant power pilferage and meter tampering.

Shopkeepers closed their establishments to avoid inspection and the impasse continued for a few hours. Later, a few of shopkeepers opened the shops after the authorities threatened to disconnect the power supply to the area.

Bandobust

“We wanted to shift the power meters installed inside the commercial establishment to outside for effective monitoring and replace the mechanical meters with electronic meters but the locals are resisting the move,” said Additional Divisional Engineer, Falaknuma, G. Nageshwar Rao. The police on their part made elaborate bandobust by deploying additional personnel in the area to prevent any trouble.
