SHE teams to be introduced in every district

For safer city: In-charge Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy presenting a memento to Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy in the presence of ACP (Crimes and SHE teams) Swathi Lakra and Tollywood actor Rashi Khanna at the launch of Run Expo at People’s Plaza in the city on Saturday.

The success of SHE Teams in Telangana has made it a model to be replicated in other States across the country, said Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy.

“It’s one of the prestigious projects taken up by the Telangana government to combat sexual harassment against women and has been emulated by other States given its success,” he said, after inaugurating a two-day Run Expo organised by the city police as part of International Women’s Day at People’s Plaza here on Saturday.

The expo is to raise awareness on the safety and security of women as well as on the objectives of SHE Teams.

Mr. Reddy said the Police Departments in several States, including Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, had already adopted the SHE team concept.

Appreciating the efforts of Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes and SHE teams) Swathi Lakra and her team in curbing harassment against women, he said the State government would extend all necessary help to strengthen the teams.

In Hyderabad alone, 100 teams have been operational and the department would also organise awareness campaigns on sexual harassment at educational institutions, offices and public places, he said.

The concept of friendly-policing initiated by the Police Department after the formation of the State was also getting great results, he said.

“During a visit to Telangana, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh appreciated our Greyhounds wing,” he said.

Earlier, In-charge Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy said one of the major factors leading to Hyderabad being one of the best cities to liveis because of the operations of the SHE teams.

He said the city was the safest place for women and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar feels the concept of SHE teams was more important than any other welfare programme taken up by the government.

The In-charge DGP said SHE teams would be introduced in every nook and cranny of the State within a year. Ms. Lakra said Police Departments in six States have implemented the project so far.

Additional Director General of Police Anjani Kumar, CID Chief Govind Singh, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police V.V. Srinivasa Rao, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Sandeep Shandilya, Tollywood actor Rashi Khanna and other senior police officers were present.
