Science academy deplores West Bengal BJP leader’s statement

The Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) on Thursday condemned West Bengal BJP leader’s statement about gold in cow’s milk. “Our children should not hear such statements. They go against the scientific spirit. They undermine scientific temper,” said Partha Majumder, IAS president, in Hyderabad. “The IAS will protest against such statements which are not based on facts and go against the teachings of science,” said Mr. Majumder speaking at a curtain raiser on the 85th Annual Meeting of Indian Academy of Sciences in Hyderabad. The University of Hyderabad is hosting the three-day conclave at its campus on November 8-10.

“The meeting will be a good occasion to show where science stands today. Earlier, there were great gender disparities in science. This has changed, but a lot more needs to happen,” said Mr. Majumder who spelt out how the IAS has been spreading scientific temperament among schoolchildren and college students.

“The University of Hyderabad has 16 IAS fellows, and Hyderabad has about 54. This meeting will show us the new trends in science. It will also focus on Indian problems and contemporary areas of research,” said Podile Appa Rao, Vice-Chancellor of UoH.
