A large number of applicants for the Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Minorities fail to clear the first round of scrutiny. The recent call for applications saw over 33% of applications being rejected.
According to officials at the Commissionerate for Minorities Welfare, the number of applications received so far stands at 428. Of this, 143 applications were rejected for either being incomplete, or due to technical reasons such as the expiration of validity of documents.
“In due course of application scrutiny, we see that a large number of students who want to travel abroad to study are being rejected for enclosing the test score of IELTS, GRE and others that are expired. This automatically disqualifies a candidate,” said Commissioner of Minorities Welfare Shahnawaz Qasim.
Other reasons for disqualification, Mr. Qasim said, are incomplete applications and low aggregate in technical education examinations.
“We have also noted that a lot of students do not meet the criteria of minimum qualification marks. Some of these applicants also fail to submit original documents. But we are there to guide them at every step,” Mr. Qasim said.
The Commissionerate is expected to scrutinise eligible applicants and prepare a list within 10 days.
Higher education
These students would be given financial assistance of up to ₹20 lakh for higher education – postgraduate or doctoral courses – in foreign universities. The funds would be released in two instalments.
