SCB polls: EVMs put to test before contestants

January 07, 2015 12:24 am | Updated 12:24 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Election authorities distributed electronic voting machines to be used in Secunderabad Cantonment polls on January 11 after testing them on Tuesday.

According to election returning officer T. Vittal, 642 EVMs were sent out to 187 polling stations with police escorts and stored in strong rooms. Earlier in the day, the machines were tested before contestants.

“This marks one of the most important phases of the election. The ballot papers and other election material have also been distributed,” Mr. Vittal said adding that 900 personnel have been trained for the election.

The SCB would witness its first electronic election this year as efforts in the past to introduce EVMs failed.

Meanwhile, contesting candidates lost no time in getting back to their wards for campaigning, which ends Thursday.

The TRS, which sent its Ministers and even parliamentarians to campaign for its candidates, sent Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali to attend a public gathering in Bowenpally on Tuesday.
