Saying it with colours and sculptures

Fine arts students offered commercial platform to display their works

July 30, 2012 09:48 am | Updated 09:48 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Twenty one artists and 38 works on display. ‘Embarking routes’ an exhibition of paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures by final year students of MFA from Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication, University of Hyderabad and Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad, which was inaugurated on Friday is a virtual riot of colours.

The combined initiative of Alliance Francaise, Goethe-Zentrum and Shrishti Art Gallery offers the students one of their first commercial platforms to display their works.

“Many big artists like Ramesh Gorjala showcased their works as students with us. Some students move over to multimedia firms or art schools and few choose to continue as artists. Art supplies such as painting material can be expensive and there are financial issues involved if one has to pursue art for a vocation after leaving college. This is the third year that we are hosting an exhibition of works of fine arts students. The idea is to provide an interface between artists and buyers. We have 15 students from SN School and six from JNAFAU displaying their works this year,” says Rama Mohan Das, manager Shrishti Art Gallery. On display are fibre glass, metal and wood moulded sculptures, wood cut, graphic and digital paintings, oil and acrylic on canvas and more. Themes range from mythology to portraits, as also urban frames - construction sites and rocky landscapes, not forgetting an artist’s interpretation of a ‘Spiderman’. Hailing from Yelpugonda village in Nizamabad, Aravind Kumar of SN School, finds inspiration for his untitled work from his childhood years. “I come from a family whose occupation is beedi making. Thus I decided to use the element in my work,” he says.

On till Aug. 6

The paintings are on view till August 6, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the gallery.
