Save Merit Society to petition SC against MCI

June 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Alleging malpractices in the functioning of Medical Council of India (MCI), Save Merit Society informed it would petition the Supreme Court for renewal of licences to colleges which were kept on hold by the Council.

V.A.R.K. Prasad, president of the society, alleged at a press conference here that the Council used varying standards to review institutions when they seek permission renewal. He cited a recent instance of two private colleges being denied permissions. “Permission renewal of nearly 135 medical colleges has been kept in abeyance by the MCI for five years,” he said while alleging that college managements which require permissions will pay huge sums as bribes to MCI to get renewals.

“This has caused donation rates to skyrocket in the country. In Telangana, it’s over Rs. 1 crore in private colleges,” Mr. Prasad alleged.

He said donation is being collected by institutions under the 15 per cent NRI quota in private medication institutions.

Mr. Prasad also said his society would file a second PIL in SC seeking a CBI investigation into medical education across the country.
