RR Assembly results spring surprises

May 17, 2014 12:39 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:04 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Disproving all the pre-poll surmises, the TDP-BJP combine emerged as the hit pair in the Ranga Reddy district too, with the former standing victorious in half the Assembly constituencies, and the latter opening its account in the district with one seat.

TDP won the Serilingampally, Rajendranagar, Quthbullapur, Kukatpally, Ibrahimpatnam, Maheshwaram and L.B. Nagar constituencies, while the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) could secure four seats in the district, Medchal, Malkajgiri, Tandur and Vikarabad.

Congress party virtually wriggled out with slender margins in two constituencies, Parigi and Chevella, while N.V.S.S. Prabhakar of BJP won the Uppal seat.

TDP secured two seats more than last elections, while Congress was reduced from eight to two, even while being relegated to third place in many constituencies. It is a score of four for TRS which was routed in all five constituencies it fielded candidates in during last elections.

Interestingly, three of the four winning TRS candidates in the district had been defectors from TDP.

In Vikarabad (SC) constituency, former minister G. Prasad Kumar from Congress was defeated by B.Sanjeeva Rao from TRS who had contested on TDP’s ticket in 2009.

P. Mahender Reddy from Tandur and M.Sudheer Reddy from Medchal too had shifted loyalties from TDP to TRS before securing win in the current elections.

Another TRS winner from Malkajgiri, Kanaka Reddy had contested in 2009 on PRP ticket.

At Serilingampally, incumbent Congress legislator Bhikshapati Yadav stood third, with A. Gandhi from TDP emerging victorious over the nearest TRS rival K. Shanker Goud. In Rajendranagar, T. Prakash Goud from TDP routed Gnaneshwar from Congress.

At Quthbullapur, Kuna Srisailam Goud, who had won as Independent in 2009 to join Congress later, had to face a humiliating exit, with TDP’s K.P. Vivekananda surging ahead of the nearest rival from TRS K. Hanmanth Reddy.

Kukatpally, the former constituency of Lok Satta founder Jayaprakash Narayan, has elected M. Krishna Rao from TDP this time round, over G. Padma Rao from TRS. Former Mayor and TDP candidate from Maheshwaram, Teegala Krishna Reddy avenged his defeat of 2009, by routing Malreddy Ranga Reddy from Congress.

M.Kishan Reddy from TDP could retain his seat in Ibrahimpatnam where K.Mallesh stood as the Congress candidate and Malreddy Ram Reddy as rebel. Sitting Congress MLA D.Sudheer Reddy was humbled into third place at L.B.Nagar where well-known OBC leader R.Krishnaiah from TDP won over the nearest rival M.Ram Mohan Goud from TRS.

K. Yadaiah from Chevella and T. Rammohan Reddy from Parigi were the only saving grace for Congress, who defeated sitting MLAs K.S. Ratnam and K. Hareeshwar Reddy respectively, both from TRS.
