June 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Former Chairman of PM’s Economic Advisory Council, and Chancellor of University of Hyderabad (UoH), C. Rangarajan, on Monday stressed the need of a good statistical system for the new State of Telangana.

Participating in ninth Statistics Day celebrations organised by CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS), he said there would be issues resulting from division, but the new State has a big potential to tap into. Telangana has advantage of fairly large number of academic educational institutions and the State should make full use of them, he said adding, “no other small State has such advantage”.

Dr. Rangarajan, also chairman of CR Rao AIMSCS, offered all support in developing statistical system for the State. State Government Advisor A.K. Goel stressed the commitment on part of the administration to build world class institutions in Telangana. Allam Appa Rao, Director, CR Rao AIMSCS, said the institute is doing works assigned by agencies such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) in the field of cryptology. B. Padmavathi, Dean, School of Mathematics and Statistics, UoH, also spoke at the function where prizes were distributed to winners of Seventh Statistics Olympiad.

As part of Digital India Week activities in July first week, the IT Department would be entering into partnership with CR Rao AIMSCS for measures to provide cyber security to government data of different departments. The soon to be announced new IT Policy seeks to be an early mover in the emerging fields such as Big Data and Cyber Security with a special focus on them, IT Secretary, Jayesh Ranjan, said on Monday.

At the function, Mr. Ranjan said Hyderabad despite measuring fairly well on most key parameters was behind Bangalore in the IT field as the latter had the advantage as an early mover. “In the emerging fields, we have decided to move early, and data analytics will be a key aspect in this. Carnegie Mellon University, US, has agreed to collaborate with us and MoUs have also been signed with some companies working in this field,” he said. Cyber Security would be another major area in the IT Policy, expected to be announced in a month’s time, he said.
