Rain coupled with gusty winds played havoc in the city on Saturday, uprooting several trees and bringing down poles and flexi boards at many locations.

The day, marked by sunny yet sultry weather up to about 3 p.m., gave way to sudden fall in temperature, followed by drizzle and squall at many locations. Soon, heavy rain lashed several parts of the city, especially Old City.

Affected localities

Many localities in Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Santhosh Nagar, Chaderghat, Pathhargatti, Mughalpura, Bahadurpura, Mylardevpally, Attapur, Rajendranagar, Malakpet, Dilsukhnagar, L.B.Nagar, Hayatnagar, Uppal, Malkajgiri and Kukatpally received heavy rainfall.

Roads resembled streams, causing severe traffic problems atypical of the weekend. GHMC’s emergency and disaster response teams were deployed to clear the roads of water, fallen trees and poles, and carry out rescue and restoration operations.

With the teams not reaching on time, people in Old City showed enterprise and cleared the roads with the help of police.

Two more trees were uprooted at Falaknuma Railway Station parking lot and Mughalpura. A tree fell on a mosque at Mothi Market, while another fell on Bahdurpura Police Station. Six street light poles collapsed owing to heavy winds in Falaknuma.

Trees were also uprooted behind the High Court, at Hussaini Alam police station, Mishrigunj, behind Shalibanda police station, and other locations.

The weather station near Sardar Mahal area of Malakpet recorded highest rainfall in the city at 3 cm. The stations at Viratnagar in Saroornagar, Chndulal Baradari, Asmangadh, Moulali, and Rajendranagar too recorded considerable rainfall.

Meteorology department recorded the maximum temperature at 37.4 degrees Celsius which is two degrees lower than normal, and the minimum at 24.5 degrees.
