A prisoner at Cherlapally central jail who swallowed nails was rushed to Gandhi Hospital on Friday after he developed abdominal pain.
Doctors at the hospital said Ramesh was brought in after he attempted suicide at the prison. The nails he swallowed were lodged in his small intestine after passing unhindered through the food-pipe and stomach. However, as the prisoner refused to give consent for surgery, the doctors said they will wait for his relatives to arrive on Saturday to take their consent. However, doctors ruled out any threat to his life.
Jail authorities said Ramesh was a habitual offender.
“He had applied for bail but it was opposed by the police,” a jail official said adding that Ramesh was a remand prisoner in a murder case.
