Police arrest TJAC chief at Toopran

Left party activists being taken into custody when they staged a dharna protesting the arrest of Prof. Kodandaram, in Nizamabad on Saturday.

Heavy police force with several restrictions was seen during the fourth phase of Amarula Spoorthi Yatra taken up by Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) chairman Prof. M. Kodandaram on Saturday.

Mr. Kodandaram, proceeding to Nizamabad district, was finally arrested and shifted to Kowdipally police station.

High drama was witnessed since morning in the district as Prof. Kodandaram tried to proceed and participate in the second day of Amarula Spoorthi Yatra, with the police preventing and shifting him to Kowdipally police station.

As the journey commenced in the morning in Hyderabad, about five police vehicles shadowed the vehicle of the TJAC leader. At one point of time, one police vehicle was in the front while two were on either side of Mr. Kodandaram’s vehicle.

“Are we terrorists? Why are so many policemen following us? Don’t we have the right to express what we feel? Are we really in democracy?” asked Prof. Kodandaram.

Countering the police warning that they would register cases under Sections 144 and 151 of the IPC, the TJAC leader said that they have not violated any section.

“They have to arrest the TRS activists who attacked us on Friday. Instead, police are trying to register false cases against us,” Prof. Kodandaram said.

The police of Sangareddy, Medak and Nizamabad coordinated and prevented the TJAC leaders from moving ahead.

Even after the release, Prof. Kodandaram was not allowed to speak to the media and was taken to Hyderabad.
