A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday challenging the new rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Regulation of Live Stocks Markets) by a Hyderabad-based organisation All India Jamaiatul Queresh Action Committee.
Appearing for the petitioner Sanobar Qureshi requested the Division Bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Dipak Gupta for an early listing of the case on June 15.
The litigation challenges both the Regulation of Livestock Market Rules-2016 as well as Care and Maintenance of Case Property Animals Rules-2016 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
“By imposing a ban on slaughter of animals for food, the citizens with a choice to eat the flesh of such animals would be deprived of such food, which violates the right to food, privacy and personal liberty, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. The impugned provisions, offend the Right to Freedom of Religion guaranteed under Article 25 of the Constitution of India. The said impugned rules are against the guidelines issued in various judgements of Supreme Court and High Courts of the States,” states the PIL.
