Plans to fight for BC quota in GP polls

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has celebrated 134th Foundation Day of the party — Indian National Congress — with a vow to fight for increase in the reservation to Backward Classes at least to 34% in the forthcoming gram panchayat elections.

Senior party leaders K. Jana Reddy, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Md. Ali Shabbir, V. Hanmanth Rao, Madhu Yaskhi, Mallu Ravi, J. Kusuma Kumar, K. Janardhan Reddy and others participated in the event wherein TPCC chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy hoisted the party flag at Gandhi Bhavan here on Friday.

Stating that the basic ideology of Congress was uplift of downtrodden sections of society and social justice, the TPCC president alleged that injustice was done to BCs in gram panchayat elections’ reservation. However, the party was getting ready for legal battle on the quota for BCs in the GP elections, he stated.

Former MP V. Hanmanth Rao accused the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi of deceiving BCs by bringing an Ordinance with lower quota for them in GP elections after winning the Assembly elections with their support. He alleged that Chief Minister and TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao was conspiring to suppress BCs in politics.

Asking the BC legislators in TRS to raise their voice against injustice being done to the communities, Mr. Rao said the TRS government trying to limit the BCs only to sheep and buffaloes. He felt that injustice to BCs in GP elections would have been averted had the government been responded with a petition in time. However, the Congress would go up to Supreme Court to fight for justice to BCs, he said.
