Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao has asserted that the government is committed to fast track the ongoing work on the Palamuru-Ranga Reddy lift irrigation scheme on the lines of Kaleswaram project.

The Minister expressed concern that some vested interests approached the courts to secure stays on the project. The government is committed to expedite work once these litigations are cleared. Mr. Harish Rao reviewed the package-wise progress of work on Palamuru-Ranga Reddy project with senior officials on Friday.

Package-I through

Officials informed the Minister that earth work to the extent of 18 lakh cubic metres out of the 66 lakh cubic metres targeted in package-I had been completed. Mr. Rao wanted the engineers to ensure that work relating to underground pump house, tunnel and gravity canal are completed speedily so that drinking water could be provided to Mahabubnagar district from the next summer season.

Steps should also be initiated to make payment of ₹49 crore required for acquisition of forest lands for the project while work on reservoir, surge pool and other components of the project should be speeded up. Engineers should treat work under Package-I as priority and ensure its completion at the earliest. The Minister enquired about the progress of work relating to Anjanagiri reservoir when officials informed him that three reaches were planned as part of package-II of the project.

Rock fill dam model

He suggested the engineers to adopt rock fill dam model, on the lines of Tehri dam, to overcome the sand shortages faced in reach-II while focus should be on technical issue related to the project.

Officials should also work out the modalities relating to construction of diversion roads and finalise whether the works should be entrusted to the executing agencies or Roads and Buildings department.

Efforts should be made to resolve the issues relating to rehabilitation and resettlement of the project affected families and proposals for release of funds should be forwarded accordingly.
