The police were caught off-guard as protesters stormed the Tank Bund in several batches from different directions to take part in the ‘Chalo Tank Bund’ call given by striking TSRTC Joint Action Committee.

By 1 p.m. the protesters successfully breached the tight security and staged dharna near Ambedkar Statue by raising slogans against the State government and police department.

While the police were busy detaining a batch, another group started marching towards the Tank Bund, making it difficult for them to contain the protesters.

The sudden spurt of violence in the form of stone-pelting forced the police to take up lathi charge, fired tear gas shells and water cannons, which left several protesters injured.

Officials at the spot maintained that they never wanted to use these tactics as the plan was to make sure that the mob did not reach the Tank Bund. “But, when they (protesters) started pelting stones, we took orders from the top brass and took up lathi charge and fired tear gas canisters to disperse them,” he said.

When asked about the persons injured, he said that not only the protesters, even their men too suffered bleeding injuries and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar said the protest was led by TSRTC JAC was supported by some frontal organisations of Maoists and their friendly organisations like PDSU, RSU and opposition parties.

“Though we have denied permission, they tried to stage the protest by pelting stones on our men,” he said.

He said that six cases have been registered and they will soon identify the persons who started the stone-pelting. “We will never tolerate such unlawful incidents,” he said.
