After being kept in the cold storage for almost two years, the project to lay the 15-km sewerage main trunk line from Picket Nala to open nala at S.P. Road in the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) finally took off on Tuesday.
SCB lacks underground drainage system and this project was initiated to address the problems of overflowing drains and free flow of sewage water. The project is being taken up by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) in association with Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) under Japan International Cooperation Agency.
In different phases
The project works commenced at Sowjanya Colony in Ward no.1. It would be taken up in different phases, including laying trunk line from New City Colony to S.P. Road, A.P. Text Book Press Colony to Paradise road, Sikh Village, Paigah Colony, Rasoolpura Colonies and Paradise road to Necklace road.
Authorities have planned this project to cater to the increase in population for the next 30 years. All the works, including restoration of roads with cement-concreting would be taken up under the project.
Though the project was initiated two years back, it got delayed due to various reasons, including the delay in allotment of funds. There was a stage, when residents had lost hopes about this project. Initially, it was estimated to cost about Rs.55 crore and HMWSSB granted the project at a cost of about Rs.38 crore through tenders.
HMWSSB authorities informed the Board that all the works would be completed in one year. Works in different residential colonies would be finished in four months. But there could be problems while laying trunk lines on main roads, particularly between Balamrai chowrastha and Tadbund.
It is a high traffic zone and there is no alternative way as well. This could affect the works a bit. However, efforts would be made to avoid inconvenience to road users, residents and the board would extend all help to the HMWSSB to complete the project early, says SCB Chief Executive Officer S. Balakrishna.
