Students staging a protest at Osmania University in the city on Thursday.

Girl students residing in ladies hostels of Osmania University staged a dharna, alleging poor basic facilities such as water and food in the hostels.

Traffic came to a grinding halt as students sat on the OU main road in front of the hostels, demanding immediate action from the officials.

They also said hostels should be managed by principals and not wardens and added that repeated representations to the officials fell on deaf ears, which was why they had to resort to dharna.

Talks with students

OU Registrar Gopal Reddy and OSD Krishna Rao visited the students and assured them that their demands would be considered with a sympathetic view. They said the water problem would be solved immediately and other issues would be looked into. Students relented after the assurances given by the officials.

Officials, however, expressed helplessness in solving certain issues related to policy decisions, and the absence of a regular Vice-Chancellor was one such issue. They sought cooperation from the students in evicting non-boarders who were enjoying the benefits at the cost of genuine students.

A senior official claimed that nearly a thousand non-boarders were residing in the hostels and this illegal occupation should end if genuine boarders were to enjoy their rightful benefits in the hostels.
