Osmania University, the nerve-centre of the Telangana agitation for the last four years, erupted in joy with the Telangana formation all set to become a reality.
Hundreds of students from the hostels gathered at the historic Arts College bursting fire crackers and raising Jai Telangana slogans. Homage was paid to the students who committed suicides seeking a separate state.
Bike rallies across the campus were taken out while general public also joined the celebrations at Tarnaka and NCC Gate, the entry points of the university.
“It’s a dream come true and the credit should go to students,” said M. Krishank, spokesperson of OU JAC, that primarily led to the students’ agitation. “At the same time we are cautious,” he said adding that Hyderabad should be capital only for five years.
“The process should start immediately introducing the Bill at the earliest in Parliament,” said Kailash Netha, president of Telangana Students JAC. “We thank all the political parties that supported students in this struggle,” he said.
Students, however, warn the political parties against forgetting the sacrifices of students.
“The new Telangana Government should recognise them and support their families,” said Rudra Reddy, a research scholar.
Peace returns
A majority of the students are also relieved that now they can concentrate on studies.
“Peace will return to Osmania University and everyone desperately needs it,” said Venkateshwarlu, a research scholar.
Meanwhile, celebrations broke out in several parts of the city as well with people coming onto streets and dancing to the drum beats. At many places tents were put up and TV sets were placed at Alwal, L.B. Nagar and other areas.
