On International Yoga Day, thousands twist, bend and stretch

Host of programmes organised across the State to mark the occasion; people urged to make yoga a part of daily life to overcome stress

Collector Sarfaraz Ahmad said yoga, the country’s ancient tradition of holistic approach to good health and well being, is an invaluable gift to the world.

Participating in the International Yoga Day celebrations at SRR Government Degree and PG College here on Friday, he urged citizens to make yoga “a habit for healthy living”.On the occasion, he performed yoga asanas with NCC cadets and NSS volunteers of the college. SRR College principal K. Ramakrishna and 9 Telangana battalion NCC commanding officer Col. Satish Kumar also took part in the programme.

Various other educational institutions in the town such as Paramita Educational Institutions, Iris World School and Bhagavathi High School also observed the day by holding yoga sessions on their respective premises.

At the Alphores Educational Institutions, Satavahana University registrar Umesh Kumar attended as chief guest.

Prisoners take part

In Khammam, inmates of the District Jail participated in a yoga session held on the prison premises at Danvaigudem. In other parts of the district, rallies were organised by students of various educational institutions to raise awareness on the benefits of yoga as an effective method for attaining physical and mental well-being. Yoga awareness meetings and demonstrations were also held in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district.

Warangal was witness to a host of Yoga Day programmes attended by the city’s well known faces. Mayor Gunda Prakash Rao took part at an event at J.N. Stadium along with Warangal West MLA D. Vinay Bhaskar, former MLA M. Dharma Rao, corporator Vemula Srinivas, Ayush nodal officer B. Laxminarayana, Ananta Laxmi Ayurvedic College principal urgabai and superintendent C. Vijayapal Reddy.

In Adilabad, yoga camps were organised at various places to mark the fifth International Yoga Day. The official programme was held at Revenue Gardens which saw participation of Collector D. Divya. She advised people to devote a few minutes of their daily routine to yoga to fight stress.

The occasion was celebrated across the undivided Nizamabad district with gaiety. A programme was conducted jointly by Field Outreach Bureau of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Government of India), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanghatan, Department of Ayush, District Yoga Association and Indian Red Cross Society.

At the main function held at SVL Kalyana Vedika at Borgam, Nizamabad Collector M. Ram Mohan Rao, TSSP 7th Battalion Commandant N.V. Sambaiah, former MLA Yendala Laxminarayana, BJP district president Palle Ganga Reddy, BJP leaders Dhanpal Suryanarayana and Y. Sudhakar and IRCS district chairman N. Ramchander participated.

For special children

Yoga Day was also celebrated by educational institutions too. Sneha Society for Rural Reconstruction, a social service organisation, conducted a programme at its school for differently-abled children. Society secretary S. Sidhaiah and District Welfare Officer Sravanthi attended the celebrations and witnessed asanas by the children.

Participating in the yogasanas at Saraswathi Sisu Mandir at Kamareddy, Collector N. Satyanarayana said yoga was only the solution to beating stress that comes with a modern lifestyle.

At Telangana University, registrar D. Balaramulu inaugurated the celebrations.
