A ‘mentally unstable’ woman allegedly killed her 40-day-old daughter and dumped the body in a water sump at Gachibowli on Sunday.

The woman, identified as Manasa, wife of a daily wage earner in Peddapalli district came to her parents’ house in street No. 3 of Gachibowli for delivery nearly five months ago, police said. Investigators said that Manasa was mentally ill and has been undergoing treatment.

“On Sunday, when the infant girl disappeared, her grandparents started searching for her in the vicinity and the body was found floating in the sump,” cops said.

Manasa, who confessed to killing her newborn daughter, is yet to be arrested by the police, as they are seeking legal opinion over her present health condition. Police, who sent the victim’s body for autopsy, suspect the infant was throttled and the body was dumped in a sump. “We also suspect that someone has influenced the woman to kill her own daughter,” the investigators said.
