Giving further boost to women’s safety, Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy on Wednesday inaugurated an NRI Women Safety Cell, where matrimonial issues will be dealt with.

The new cell headed by IGP (Law &Order) Swati Lakra will function from the Telangana Women Safety Wing office at Lakdi-ka-pul.

“Sensitisation of women should be taken up at the grassroots level to tackle problems like fake NRI marriages. This cell will act as a platform to share their (victims) suffering and help them with all possible legal guidance, ” Mr. Reddy said.

According to him, the proposed law amendments will help the victims in fighting legal battles against harassment by NRI spouses and relatives.

“Stakeholders should work with long-term goal and influence lawmakers in providing justice for victims,” he said, adding that the they should extend their best effort through expertise, guidance and knowledge to help the victims.

Earlier, Ms. Lakra said that the new cell will guide Station House Officers during investigation of cases related to harassment by NRI spouse and relatives.

“SHOs will be trained on how to investigate such cases and provide legal guidance to victims for further approaches and contacts, liaison with agencies like embassies, Ministry of External Affairs, National Women Commission, NGOs as and when required,” she said. Representatives from the MEA, 14 foreign embassies, Woman Police Station SHOs and others took part.
