GHMC yet to complete the land acquisition process for road widening towards Masab Tank

The construction of a parallel bridge at Lakdikapul to facilitate smooth flow of traffic on the ever-busy stretch continues to get delayed.

In what should have been completed by October 13 last year, the bridge works got stretched by over a month to November 20, for various reasons. And now it appears that the works will get delayed further due to land acquisition.

The parallel bridge from the Intelligence Office Building to FAPCCI Marg is being constructed at a cost of Rs.9.14 crore. While South Central Railway (SCR) is constructing the Road over Bridge (RoB), GHMC will be constructing the approach roads on either sides of the bridge.

Bridge construction works that commenced in July last year were to be completed by October 13. Though SCR authorities claim to have almost completed their part of the job, the GHMC is yet to complete the land acquisition process.

The Corporation has to acquire property for taking up road widening works towards Masab Tank. An area of about 800 square yards needs to be acquired and GHMC authorities explain that efforts are on to finalise it.

The property is in a prime area and it requires at least couple of crores for acquisition. Once the award is finalised, special permission needs to be obtained from the government for payment as it involves a huge amount – more than Rs.50 lakh requires such approvals, said GHMC Additional Commissioner (Planning) Dhanunjaya Reddy.

“But things would be settled very shortly and it should not be a big problem,” says Mr. Reddy. Besides land acquisition, it also has to pay the last instalment of the total cost to SCR to complete the remaining works. The Corporation had agreed to pay the entire project cost in four instalments.

SCR authorities say that the GHMC is yet to pay over Rs.2 crore and a reminder seeking payment was also sent recently. Admitting the delay, Mr. Reddy said the file was being processed and the balance payment would be completed at the earliest.
