Nizam’s kin denounce OU move to rename main library

Decision is deplorable, short-sighted: last Nizam’s grandson

The kin of Seventh Nizam, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan have expressed resentment over the decision of Osmania University authorities to rename the varsity library building after social reformer Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

They have requested the Governor to intervene in the matter and direct the authorities not to meddle with a heritage institution established by the last Nizam.

A grandson of the last Nizam and president of the Nizam Family Welfare Association, Nawab Najaf Ali Khan appreciated the university authorities for establishing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Research Centre but said renaming the Osmania University Library was uncalled for.

Nizam’s gesture

“Dr. Ambedkar was a highly respected social reformer who fought against social discrimination and influenced by his ideas and teachings, the last Nizam had allotted 54 acres land to him for establishing Milind Maha Vidyalaya at Aurangabad,” Mr. Khan said.

Quoting Dr. Ambedkar’s presidental address at the conference for the depressed classes held in London in 1931, Mr. Najaf Ali Khan stated that the former had thanked the Government of Nizam for making the conference a reality. Further, Dr. Ambedkar had stated that the Nizam Government had opened special schools for the education of depressed classes and that no other State had provided such facility, Mr. Khan said.

“We strongly condemn the renaming of one of the oldest libraries in Hyderabad built by our grandfather,” Mr. Khan said, adding that the library has a collection of over 6 lakh books and over 7,000 manuscripts including the rare palm leaf manuscripts. “Dr. Ambedkar would never have approved such a hypocrite act of renaming a historical building and destroying the heritage and legacy of Hyderabad,” he pointed out.

‘Roll back decision’

Mr. Khan has also made a similar request to the Vice-Chancellor of the university to ask the committee concerned to roll back its decision. “The decision to rename the library is highly deplorable and short-sighted as it has been taken disregarding the sentiment of the founder of the university and the students of all castes, creed and religions benefiting from it,” Mr. Khan said.

Function on May 17

The official function to rename the main library of the university as part of inauguration of the research centre is slated for May 17. For the record, the university library was officially inaugurated by the then President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on August 3, 1963.
