Nine arrested in Nabeel death case

Nine youngsters including two juveniles were arrested on Thursday by the police for the alleged murder of an Intermediate student Nabeel Mohammed in a ‘friendly fight’ early this month at Panjesha in the Old City.

Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, DCP (South) V. Satyanarayana said that Nabeel died after being continuously punched by Awais Patel during a `friendly fight' organised by a group of 10 friends in the early hours of May 3.

The group wandered around the city the previous night. Early in the morning they gathered near a school at Panjesha and held a fight. “Awais and Nabeel were the third pair to compete, before the former defeated two of his friends. During the fight Awais punched Nabeel severely resulting in internal injuries. He suffered a brain haemorrhage and subsequently died,” the official said.

Soon after Nabeel collapsed his friends took him to a hospital on a two wheeler where doctors declared brought dead. “To avoid getting caught they planned the accident story and convinced the family members to perform the last rites. However, the victim’s father grew suspicious a few days after the incident and approached us,” the DCP said.

The official ruled out any connection between the deaths of their friends Mudassir and Ibrahim Yafai reported in last two years and the Nabeel case. “We have thoroughly probed both cases and found that it is just a coincidence. The families did not approach the police as they did not want autopsy to be conducted,” Mr. Satyanarayana said.
