ICMR-NIN Director R. Hemalatha has been elected unanimously for the executive committee of Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS) for a four-year term 2019-23.
FANS is an international body of professional nutrition societies and associations from across Asia. The election was held at the recently-concluded 13th Asian Congress of Nutrition in Bali.
The NIN Director is known for her research in the realm of nutrition, infection and immunity with special emphasis on women and child health. She has contributed significantly in the area of preconception nutrition and the first 1,000 days of life.
She also conducted a battery of studies on probiotics and gut as well as vaginal microbiome profiling in pregnant women that have generated vital information on the impact of inflammation on foetal growth and pregnancy outcomes.
Dr. Hemalatha is recipient of Ponduri VR Rao Gold Medal, and Dr. Rajammal P Devadas Memorial Award. She is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (FNAMS), Fellow of the Telangana Academy of Sciences (FTAS) and Fellow of the International Union of Nutrition Sciences (FIUNS). She is also the ex-offcio office bearer of the Nutrition Society of India.
